Marco Mendicino says after COVID 19 Canada will need newcomers

May 23, 2020BY Murlidyc

On Friday, federal Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino spoke about immigrant labor’s role in developing the country during the COVID-19 pandemic and the assurance of the health and safety of Canadians.

Mendicino had released the Liberals’ next three-year plan for immigration just as the CORONA began to force travel bans and border shutdowns in March. The admission of 341,000 permanent residents by 2020, 351,000 by 2021, and 361,000 by 2022, records highs.

At a House of Commons committee, Conservative immigration critic Peter Kent asked Marco Mendicino if Canada could accommodate additional immigrants and refugees in the foreseeable future while the economic crisis will linger long and the health crisis has passed and would be updated about the levels in the fall.

He said the pandemic has showcased that they couldn’t support front-line workers without immigration and that future will be supported by immigration as in the past. All Temporary foreign workers were initially shut out from Canada as the borders were closed except citizens or permanent residents. The government would create better roads to PR for temporary foreign workers, Mendicino said.

A new program expected to open for applications earlier this year was delayed due to Pandemic which would enable workers to settle permanently in Canada.
The parent and grandparent sponsorship program of late April is on hold with the absence of the international student’s program who pour an estimated $21.6 billion into the economy may be a huge blow this Fall with the borders shut.
Canadian govt is trying to keep students connected to Canada by permitting students with online courses to qualify for their working visas.

Refugee program resettlement is on hold.

The Liberals were criticized for shutting down the borders in March for new arrivals and Advocates believe that the world’s most vulnerable need assistance now than ever. On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Canada remains committed to upholding its refugee resettlement obligations under the international convention with the Canadians health and safety to be prioritized.

Canada confirmed cases are 122,040 with 108,484 recoveries. Total no for deaths 9,026. 5,565,908 tests administered
