Public Safety Mimister Marco Mendicino introduced a legislation to the RCMP to handle public complaints about Canada Border Services Agency.Border Officers can stop to question the travellers, take breath and blood samples, detain and arrest people without Warrants.
Michelaine Lahare, Chairperson of the existing RCMP Complaints Commission expressed her satisfaction over the inclusion of many of her key recommendations in the bill. Mendicino said codifying timelines is an efficient way to remain vigilant. The RCMP and Border Agency would submit annual report on the progress in implementing commission recommendations. The new public Complaints and Review Commission would not only carry reviews of any non- national security activities of RCMP and Border Services Agency but also would conduct investigations concerning both the agencies thereby strengthening law and enforcement agencies accountability, transparency and trust in them leading to a safer country for everyone.
