Changes to facilitate online learning for international students

July 15, 2020BY Meghana

July 14, 2020—OttawaInternational students tremendous cultural and social contributions to Canada, and generating more than $21 billion in economic activity and supporting 170,000 jobs,54,000 former students becoming PR in Canada in 2018. International students are often excellent candidates to remain permanently in Canada.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges worldwide, the Canadian government is safeguarding the health of Canadians minimizing the economic and social impact of restrictions.

Marco E. L. Mendicino made several temporary policy changes to support and reassure international students by beginning a new program online which enhances Canada’s reputation as a major destination for international students and their contribution to Canada.

The new measures include

Study-permit processing for students and ensure that permits are processed expeditiously. International students who cannot submit applications can pursue programs through distance learning.

Prospective students need to pursue their studies online from abroad following the approval-in-principle of a study permit.

An application does not guarantee that they will receive full approval of their study permit application, or be authorized to pursue their studies in Canada.

The temporary stages for approval are approval-in-principle and eligibility/admissibility:

The individuals who pass the approval-in-principle stage— showing their acceptance at a Canadian learning institution, are sufficiently funded and eligible for the study permit—will be informed of a first-step approval.

On the issuance of approval-in-principle, applicants can commence online studies abroad.

Final approval will be obtained after the applicant meets all eligibility and admissibility requirements, including biometrics, an immigration medical exam, a police certificate, and once approved the applicant can travel to Canada.
